What Stress-Free People Do Differently

Keighley Brown February 02, 2023

You can’t completely eliminate stress from your life. Stressors are everywhere. It could be your boss, the daily traffic jam, and those unending office works. Sometimes it is your partner, your parents, your pets, your kids, your best friend – and other people around you.

But you might wonder – why is it that some people look and act like they are stress-proof? Well, those are people who are ‘experts’ when it comes to managing their stress levels. Want to know their secrets? Continue reading.

They love themselves (so much). Stress-free people treat their bodies with love and care. They treat themselves like they treat their best friend. When they are feeling stressed, they stop working to spend some time doing things that relax and calm them down. They take a warm bath, they visit the spa, they play with their pets, they bake, they plant, etc. When they can’t get up from their desk to do these things, they simply hug themselves tight whilst whispering words of encouragement to themselves. Practising self-love is a crucial part of stress management. When you love yourself, you will do everything to keep your health and well-being in good condition.

They see the glass half full. When it comes to managing stress, your perspective plays a big role because most of the time, stress is made up by false beliefs and negative self-talk. Stress-free individuals look at the glass half full rather than half empty. They know that pessimism won’t help but will just worsen the problems they are having. Instead of “stressing” themselves out, they focus on finding solutions. And they never lose hope. They look at the bigger picture instead of the little imperfect details. More importantly, these people embrace whatever life throws at them with gratitude. With optimism, your stress levels won’t go higher than what you can’t bear.

They know and value their core values. Stress-free people have a set of core values that they live by. It helps them make decisions and form their attitude towards others. Such values also guide them in their actions. Before responding to a stressful situation, they make sure that their response would not contradict their core values. By identifying the values you live by – such as kindness, honesty, respect, and commitment – you won’t feel confused, afraid or in doubt of the actions you will take and the decisions you will make.

They do less. Many people feel guilty about doing nothing. They think they are not being productive when they are just sitting on the couch doing nothing. They feel they don’t deserve taking a long vacation from work. But a huge body of research suggests that well-rested individuals tend to be more productive at work. What’s more, they also perform better than their burned out peers. You may feel like multi-tasking makes you feel productive and important. But nothing is more rewarding than being able to give your 100% in ever task you do. Focus on one task at a time. Learn to manage your time well, and don’t forget to insert some “me-time” to your daily schedule, no matter how busy you are. It doesn’t matter if you only spare 15 or 30 minutes on it, what’s more important is that you make the most out of it. During your “me-time”, try really hard to forget about your worries, your work, obligations, and everything else. Just focus on the moment. Enjoy and have fun!

They have their own ‘pick-me-up’ strategies. Stress-free individuals know how to redeem themselves from stress and overcome stressful situations very effectively. Some find refuge from practising deep breathing exercises whilst others from taking a short walk, meditating, taking a nap, playing with their pets, exercising, stretching, making a journal, drinking tea or coffee, or watching a funny video. Others deal with a stressful situation by simply emptying their minds and doing nothing until their emotions subside. The key is finding the strategies that work best for you. Experiment and figure out the best ‘pick-me-up’ tricks that can help you overcome stress. Just make sure you are using something that doesn’t harm your health. Or else, you defy the very purpose of relaxation.

Stress is just around the corner. But you don’t have to live your whole life fearing stress or succumbing to it. By loving yourself a little more, being optimistic, sticking to your core values, managing your time well, and practising healthy relaxation techniques, you can effectively overcome stress and be more than ready to face whatever challenge life throws at you.
