NHS Has More Cash and Lives to Save with Hypnotherapy

With the surge of different kinds of diseases and the cost of medical treatments, experts recommend hypnotherapy as a means to save the NHS millions of pounds.

Hypnotherapy has long been used to treat many kinds of diseases though only few have full knowledge of it as a medical treatment. In some cases, even medical doctors make use of hypnosis to help patients overcome the pain and anxiety brought about by severe illnesses such as cancer. According to the Royal Society of Medicine, Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine Department, alternative medicines such as hypnosis relieve pain as well as stress. This treatment is also used in childbirth to prepare the mother in giving birth and to lessen fear, discomfort, and nervousness. There were several cases as well were hypnosis has been used by cancer specialists and anaesthetists in clinical procedures.

Medical Hypnotherapy

Hypnotism was primarily used before as a treatment for the condition called Victorian era or hysteria. And as time passed by, such popular treatment was proven to cure subclinical depression, habit disorders, insomnia, and alcohol or drug addiction. According to the president of Royal Society of Medicine Hypnosis Section, Dr Peter Naish, hypnosis is a useful tool which he would like to be used widely across NHS. The challenge lies in the fact that not all medical practitioners acknowledge the use of hypnotherapy in treating severe kinds of human disorders and diseases. Nonetheless, the Hypnosis Section warns that when practiced by inexperienced and unreliable hypnotherapists, the patient’s condition may just get worse and NHS may end up spending more cash.

Hypno Cowboys- Undermining the Credibility of Treatment

Nonetheless, the power of hypnotherapy is being undermined by quack doctors and hypno-cowboys that perform hypnosis in a wrong way leading to the worsening of a patient’s condition. Experts from the Hypnosis section of Royal Society of Medicine said that there are hypnotherapy practitioners who lack extensive trainings and these people used to carry out procedures that exacerbate the circumstances and mental condition of their clients; just like in bringing about false memories to treat patients with psychological disorders and/or traumas.

More scientists are getting convinced with hypnotherapy as a medical treatment. This natural therapy approach has been practiced by people thousands of years ago but it took sometime before hypnosis as a tool has been taken seriously by the medical people. It is to be noted that it was in 1955 when British Medical Association approved hypnosis as a valuable treatment but the application has been gradual.

There’s No Magic in Hypnotherapy

Dr Naish said during an interview conducted by BBC, “one of the reasons we do believe that it will not just save money, or it would reduce the need for drugs and so on… But additionally, the general public will see it as a perfectly normal thing. It’s not some weird or wonderful stage show and neither do they have to go to some strange people they see in the yellow pages with questionable qualifications… We would like the NHS to go only to people who had a recognised qualification with hypnosis. It’s easy to know. There’s no magic.”
