August 31, 2011

Sleeping is one of the most important routine that human beings should do to maintain a good health. It is the time when all the organs of the body can relax and take a rest from 24 hours of work. Sleeping is also a great way to refresh the mind from bad feelings and stressful thoughts. It is the ultimate way of getting rest. Even in grade school, children are taught to have at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep. However, not everyone is lucky enough to enjoy a good night slumber. There are a lot of people who suffer from sleep disorders. In a study conducted by researchers from the Harvard University and published on the Journal Hypertension, it was found out that aged men (over 65 years) who spend a little time having a good sleep are prone to developing high blood pressure and heart problems. In the said study, 784 patients who had problems sleeping were found out to be at risk by 83 percent than those who enjoy deep sleep. The effect is true even in elderly women though it was found out that women are the ones who generally experience good sleep than men.

According to the researchers, people who get less of quality sleep are prone to experience high blood pressure which can lead to horrible cases of heart attacks and strokes. The U.S. scientists, from Harvard University, say that those who get less of this type of sleep are more prone to suffer from high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. It was sighted on the same study that in every 5 male Britons, one dies from heart attack. On the other hand, in every 7 female Britons, one dies from the same disease.

There are many reasons why people suffer from bad sleep. Even healthy individuals experience difficulty in sleeping. This may be caused by stress, depression, poor nutrition, unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise, etc. Fortunately, there are natural ways to make your sleep a quality slumber.

1. Aromatherapy

No one wants to sleep in a room which looks and smells messy. Plenty of studies have been made to support the claim that aromatherapy is a good way to make people fall in deep sleep. Aromatherapy involves the use of scented oils and mixtures to brighten up the mood of a person. The most popular is the use of lavender. It is said that this flower has sedative effects which can improve the quality of sleep. Taking a bath with aromatherapy oils is one way to prepare for a refreshed and sound sleep.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most popular alternative therapies in the world. This powerful treatment can help many kinds of diseases and used to alleviate stress. A study in the University of Pittsburgh explained how acupuncture can improve sleep. In fact, this natural therapy has also been used for insomnia and other sleep disorders. Acupuncture is said to increase the level of melatonin in the body which is the hormone responsible for falling asleep.

3. Meditation

Part of the process of falling asleep involves physical relaxation. This could be the reason why people lie in bed when sleeping. Meditating induces the body and mind to totally relax. With a clear mind and relaxed body, there’s a great chance that the person falls asleep easily and comfortably.

4. Finding your sleep comfort zone

Finding your comfort zone is the best way to fall asleep. Some people can’t sleep when the radio’s on while some necessitate loud music to sleep. Other people can’t sleep properly on a soft bed while most do. By observing your habits, you can find ways to have the quality of sleep you’ve always wanted and develop a healthier body.
