- About Barbara Kelly
-
Whilst I work with many issues and problems, I specialize in working with individuals and couples concerned about their relationship. Most of life’s difficulties can be managed if everything is all right at home, but when your relationship isn’t going well it can make everything else seem so much harder to cope with.
Confidential counselling sessions provide safe time and space for you to consider what has been happening in your relationship, gain insight and understanding into how you each contribute to the situation, consider how to make changes and find ways forward.
Generally couples are able to improve their relationship through counselling, but there are no guarantees that things will change for the better and sometimes during counselling couples decide to separate. However, if that is the case, counselling can help couples separate in a more amicable way.
Often couples come together for appointments, but counselling can still be helpful if your partner doesn’t want to join you.
At the first meeting I’ll invite you to tell me about what’s concerning you so that we can think together about whether counselling is the best way forward. If we agree that it is, we can take some time to consider the frequency of sessions and appointment times. Counselling is usually on a weekly basis and at the same time each week but don’t worry if that’s not possible for you. I have morning, afternoon and evening appointments available on weekdays and morning appointments on Saturdays.
Many clients tell me at the end of counselling that they have found it helpful, often because it has enabled them to talk about things that they haven’t been able to take up together before, or have not been able to talk about in a constructive way. Couples counselling isn’t a quick fix, but it is a way of getting to the bottom of things and moving on
- My training, work experience and any achievement
-
My core counselling training was with Relate. I hold the Relate Certificate in Marital and Couple Counselling Theory and Practice and I’m a BACP accredited counsellor.
I studied Social with Clinical Psychology at University of Kent at Canterbury (BSc Hons), completing my degree in 1997.
I’ve been working with individuals and couples since 1991, initially at Relate and since 1997 in my private practice in Faversham.
I keep abreast of changes and advances in couples counselling theory and practice through an ongoing programme of continuing professional development.
