About Paula Chuter-Baker

We all have times in our lives where we face difficulties. These difficulties could arise because we are feeling depressed or anxious, it may be caused by events that we feel are out of our control i.e. bereavement, illness, redundancy, divorce or it could be a long standing issue such as reoccurring relationship problems or low self-esteem.

Counselling is a way of working with people in a safe and confidential environment to help clarify thoughts and feelings about issues that may be troubling you and helps you to find ways in which to cope.

I work in a humanistic way which means I believe everyone is unique and has strengths and resources of their own. At certain times in our lives it becomes difficult to recognise these positive feelings. By offering a non-judgemental, accepting and safe relationship, I can help you to explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviours connected to the issues that have brought you to counselling. This promotes subconscious thoughts to become conscious, giving you a different perspective, understanding and greater awareness. It is with this new awareness that you can begin to make changes to your life.

Couple Counselling

Over time relationships can experience many changes and challenges in our modern world i.e. expectations, becoming parents, career changes, illness, affairs, loss and bereavement, all of which can cause conflicts and stress. If these are not resolved it can cause arguments and miscommunications which can leave us feeling angry, disappointed, rejected, lonely, and resentful.

I offer a safe, neutral and non-judgemental space to help couples explore their issues and concerns. This can help identify patterns of behaviour as you talk through your experiences which can lead to greater understanding and clarity about the changes that are needed in your relationship and improve communication.

Outdoor Therapy

As an alternative to a conventional talking therapy taking place in the confines of a room, I offer the option of counselling sessions whilst walking in a park or countryside. I believe that by talking about problems whilst walking in a natural environment, it can give a clearer perspective, helping clients to foster change.

Research has shown that spending time in the natural environment can have significant benefits to our mental wellbeing. Combining the therapeutic process with walking, it can help promote the “feel good hormone” endorphin which reduces levels of tension, anger and depression. We walk at a pace that suits you with sessions lasting approximately 50 minutes. I offer this outdoor counselling in parks, along seafront promenades or well used South Down paths depending on the individual’s abilities within a 20 mile radius of Midhurst, West Sussex.

I work primarily from a Person Centred model which is non-directive but as I believe that one model does not suit all, I also work integratively drawing on aspects of other ways of working including Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Transactional Analysis (TA).

I am a BACP Accredited counsellor with many years experience working within the NHS both in hospitals and G.P surgeries, the voluntary sector and private practice providing both long and short term counselling. I work from home as well as from private rooms in Midhurst as part of the Midhurst Counselling and Mediation group.

I am a Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their code of ethics which ensures professionalism in ethical and professional practice to protect your well-being. I have a current DBS and Professional Insurance. I also attend regular training courses to ensure my continuing professional development.
