About AJR Therapy

My name is Adrian Rodgers, I’m 50 years old, and live in South Manchester.

I don’t think I’m a ’regular,run-of-the-mill therapist’. Why not come along for a free assessment session in which we can chat about what you want to gain from therapy, and you can ask me any questions you like about counselling in gereral; my approach to counselling, or indeed anythng else at all about my training, experience and background.

Yes, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be a key element of the way I work - but this is all down to what you as a client would actually benefit from most. I employ a variety of other methods of working too. Flexibility is key.

In a nutshell, I am:

BACP qualified and experienced
open and warm
non-judgemental
down to earth
direct
supportive
challenging (when appropriate)
fun (when appropriate)

I am not:

wishy-washy
overly intellectual
inflexible
someone who says “And how does that make you feel?”
too often
overly focused on the ‘norms’ of society

My training, work experience and any achievement

I began my training to be a Counsellor when I was in my early 40s, having experienced a number of challenging ’life events’. I had had counselling myself several times, over a number of years. Generally it worked well for me, tho’ I did think at times "Maybe I could do better than that".

Prior to becoming a Counsellor I worked for many years in events management, which is quite a stressful, fast paced ’customer focused’ industry, so I knew that I was very much a ’people person’.

Now, I am a qualified and experienced BACP registered Counsellor, with my training being based on the Integrative Model. This means that I employ a variety of therapeutic approaches, according to individual client needs.

In recent years I have worked in the 3rd Sector, in extremely varied ethnic / socio-economic / culturally diverse communities.

A major achievement for me is to now have my own private therapy practice, based in South Manchester, and covering Manchester City Centre, South Manchester, Stockport and North Cheshire.

I continue to study, and to develop my practice. Over the coming year I will be training to become a teacher of Mindfulness, an excellent tool for coping with depression, stress, anxiety and chronic pain.

Other concerns & issues I deal with

    I offer ’solution focused counselling’.

What do I mean by that?

I concentrate on what clients want to achieve, or to change in their lives through therapy. My approach does not focus on the problems of the past, or their causes (but does not ignore them either); it focuses on the present and the future. I work to help my clients construct a preferred future, and then assess realistic, achievable ways of working towards that future.

This is a practical ’real life’ approach to therapy, geared to achieve results within a relatively short timescale.

My particular areas of experience include: depression, stress, anxiety, anger, loss, low self-esteem, body image, relationships, sexuality, psycho-sexual issues, men’s issues, lack of focus, direction or purpose in life, aging and life stages, mindfulness, living an authentic life, internet addiction, porn addiction.

Adrian significantly helped me. He gave practical advice and emotional insight regarding solutions to my situation. My understanding of things was improved, which in turn improved my mental health. I would have liked to continue sessions with Adrian for a while longer, but I abruptly moved for work. Adrian appeared to combine multiple methodologies to counseling as required successfully. Adrian dispelled negative preconceptions I had about counseling by surprising me in sessions with insights I had not expected.
