About Steven Curic
I am a fully qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor and clinical supervisor with an educational background and experience of working with individuals and couples. I have been working in a group supervision setting, both as a participant and facilitator, for a number of years. I attend supervision both for my counselling and supervision work in order to ensure the best outcomes for my clients and supervisees and subscribe to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling.
I have trained Integratively, which means that I practise different counselling models: Person-Centred, Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis and Existential Therapy. I have experience in short- as well as long-term work. My work experience includes working with minority, multicultural and LGBT clients.
What is counselling and psychotherapy?
I am using the terms interchangeably, although you may find that there are different definitions available in literature. In my experience, it is often difficult to ascertain where one stops and the other one begins when working with a client. In therapy, clients often discover that some of the issues that they had taken for granted come up and need dealing with, which requires deeper work.
I aim to offer every client a safe, confidential and supportive space where you can explore your innermost thoughts and feelings in the knowledge that you will not be judged. This lack of judgement is the main condition of a therapeutic space and it makes the therapeutic relationship different from any other relationship you have experienced before in your life as a family member, friend or colleague. In order to maintain the professional boundaries of our relationship I am bound by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework, which governs professional practice of counsellors and psychotherapists in the United Kingdom.
Depending on your reasons for seeking therapy, this experience may be literally a life changing one for you and it is paramount that you as a client feel safe enough to explore the issues, question yourself and increase your awareness of the distressing factors in your life, as well as ultimately resolve the problems for which you accessed therapy in the first place. This work can take any length of time, depending on the nature of the problem, your readiness to tackle the issue and your level of engagement in the process. Therapy can bring up all kinds of feelings within you, which I as a counsellor should be able to explore with you without any danger to yourself or others.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. How often do we meet?
The sessions always take place on the same day and at the same time and last 50 minutes. During our initial interview we usually discuss the cancellation periods, absence and confidentiality, in a form of a verbal contract between us.
2. How long does the therapy last?
The length of therapy is usually discussed at the very beginning, where we set the goals of therapy and provisionally agree the number of sessions, which we can then revisit every 6 sessions or so, when assessing progress. The client always has the last word on this and I always try and discuss the ending well in advance to prepare the client for the life ‘after’ therapy, where different levels of support can be identified if necessary.
3. What format do the sessions take?
The nature of the sessions vary and depends on the client. Everybody is different and therefore requires a different approach but generally, the pace is governed by the client where the counsellor takes the role of a facilitator of the process rather than an advisor or coach. However, as an integrative counsellor and due to my previous educational background, I have a tendency for being more proactive with the client if required, as long as this is done in a sensitive manner and is helpful to the client. In counselling, we tend to encourage the expression of feeling, whether it is pain, anger, sadness or any other, whenever it is deemed safe for the client to do so.
