About Karen E Polley

I am a gentle and compassionate counsellor and hypnotherapist who strongly believes in the uniqueness of the individual and in the value of the therapeutic relationship. I can work creatively (eg using art, stones, visualisation, dreams) should clients wish, but sessions are always client led. There is no pressure or expectation.

I provide a safe, supportive, accepting and non judgemental environment where clients can explore their feelings and gradually become more aware of who they truly are. They may then be better able to make changes to their lives or situations or to cope more effectively with that which cannot be changed.

As a qualified counsellor and hypnotherapist I can offer clients counselling, hypnotherapy or a combination of the two.

Hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnosis - clients will never be encouraged to cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. I merely facilitate the process. A client will never act against his or her belief system or ethics.

The trance state is that lovely relaxed state we go into just before we fall asleep. Some clients may doze whilst under hypnosis but this does not matter as the subconscious is still working.

Under hypnosis the ‘door’ to the subconscious is ajar and so together we can gain access to memories from the past which are having a negative impact on the present.

Let me give you a very simplistic example - if I was given some bad news by someone wearing red, then my mind may well associate red with something negative and whenever I met someone wearing red in the future I would feel a sense of foreboding and dread. It is a past memory being brought to the present.

How hypnotherapy would work would be to go back to the initial event and ‘release’ the negative ties associated with the red. It’s a bit like re-educating that part of the subconscious.

Hypnotherapy can also be used to mediate between conflicting parts of a client - so if one part wanted him/her to give up smoking and another part wanted him/her to continue I would mediate between the two parts until they came to an agreement.

My training, work experience and any achievement

I initially qualified as a counsellor and then went on to complete my hypnotherapy training, believing this would give me additional skills to use to help and support my clients.

I worked in mental health in the voluntary sector for fourteen years and at a Sexual Abuse Referral Centre for three years. I also write and facilitate courses and workshops for mental health service users, voluntary organisations and corporate Managers and employees.

I have the Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel and Development, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector and a Foundation in Groupwork Skills.
