About Richard Atkinson MBACP

Counselling can be a safe and effective way to explore problems and difficult feelings. With regular meetings deeper insight into emotional and behavioural difficulties can develop. It may then become possible to explore and experience new ways of being.

I am a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor and have experience in working with many different people and issues including: addiction of many types, abuse, anger, anxiety, bereavement, child custody, depression, infertility, lack of feeling, OCD, self-esteem, trauma and relationship problems. In addition to my private practice I have provided counselling in a secondary school, a residential setting for recovery from substance abuse, a community voluntary organisation, an Employee Assistance Program and work as a counsellor with Gloucestershire County Council Occupational Health.

I provide a confidential, supportive and caring space for exploring thoughts and feelings, where you can talk without fear of judgement. I usually suggest an exploratory meeting to get a sense of each other and what it might be like to work together. Our work can be short term and focused or longer term for a more in depth exploration. If you would like to arrange an initial appointment or would like to find out more, please call me on 07828 578416. If I do not answer please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Alternatively please use the contact form to email me.

My training, work experience and any achievement

I am a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor having trained with BCPC (Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling).
I am also a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP). I work to these organisations Codes of Ethics and Practice.

Further Information

Counselling is an opportunity for you to talk in a safe and confidential setting. I will listen to you with acceptance, empathy and unconditional positive regard.

You may have come to counselling with a particular problem or issue which you wish to resolve. Together we can explore your thoughts and feelings to gain a deeper understanding of the problem and its impact on you.

I make use of different therapeutic approaches as appropriate for each individual. My underlying approach is Humanistic or Person Centred; this is a non directive approach which believes in each persons potential and the ability to make the right choices for him or herself. Alongside this I find a Psychodynamic perspective useful for looking at a person’s history and how influences or patterns from a client’s childhood may be presenting in the present. Other approaches are also valuable and inform my work e.g. Transactional Analysis, Systems Theory and Bodywork.

However, I believe that the most important factor for successful counselling is the relationship between me, the counsellor and you, the client. In the crucible of the counselling relationship many problems can be faced and worked through. I endeavour to be both friendly and supportive as a counsellor but will be robust about challenging you when appropriate.

If you are considering working with me I usually suggest an initial consultation to discuss what brought you to counselling and how it might help you. From this we can gain a sense of what it might be like to work together.

Price List

  • Counselling: £50/session

Special Online Booking Offers

Beginning
Our first meeting will be an opportunity to talk about what brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it. If we decide to work together it can be for set number of sessions, on an open ended basis or we can take it week by week.

Fees
For a fifty-minute session I charge £50. Please pay by the end of each session by cash or cheque (you can pay by debit card if we are meeting in Cirencester). If you cannot afford this please ask as I may be able to be flexible on my fee.

Times
The sessions are usually weekly, at the same time and are 50 minutes. So that people can arrive and leave in privacy, please arrive no more than a couple of minutes early. If you arrive late, we will still finish at the set time.

Missed and cancelled sessions
If you are unable to attend a session, please let me know as soon as possible. I will charge for missed sessions unless given a week’s notice except in exceptional circumstances (if possible I will offer an alternative appointment). On rare occasions I may need to cancel a session. If that happens, I will give you as much notice as I can and I will offer alternative times if I am able to.

Holidays
I will give you notice of any holidays I intend to take. I ask that you notify me of any holiday dates in advance but preferably with a months’ notice.

Ending
We will work to end at a mutually agreed time, giving attention to the finishing process. If our work together is long term I find it important to give necessary space to ending. We can agree this depending on the nature of our work.

Confidentiality
The service I offer is confidential but I will take aspects of our work to supervision. Your identity will not be disclosed. Confidentiality might only be broken if I feel you or others are at risk of harm. I will always endeavour to consult with you about this before making any disclosure.
