About Brian Dennis Counselling Service

I am a qualified and experienced counsellor practising in Exeter, Devon. I help people resolve their problems - to live in the manner that they wish, within the society that they live in.

Counselling helps people who wish to change and improve the manner in which they relate to themselves and others.
People grow up with experiences and learning which, at some stage, may become outdated for their current time in life. It may be that a different manner of thinking, and living, would be more beneficial. I work with clients to bring about the changes that they wish.

Counselling is confidential between the client and the counsellor, enabling all subjects to be addressed with respect and dignity.

People may have problems including stress, anger, lack of self-esteem, negative tendancies such as extravagances or lack of concentration. There are many problems that counselling can help, by bringing reality and awareness into peoples’ lives. Using that awareness will often enable counselling to bring changes and well-being into a person’s life. As with many subjects, often it is necessary to find out where you are in order to get to where you want to go.

Counselling can bring awareness and reality to problems that may be troubling clients. Often people do not realise the real reason for their problems, whether that problem may involve anger, stress, being unreliable, worried, or one of the many other issues that occur.

Understanding and being aware of the real reasons for personal problems enables clients to work towards resolving those issues. Skilled counselling helps in that process. It can be hard mental effort, it can also be fun, laughter and joy; leading to a more fullfulling life and sense of wellbeing.

I have lived and worked overseas in some wonderful places, and also many that may be best described as ’challenging’. Those experiences have enabled me to see a lot of this wonderful world we live in, as well as some of the problems that many people have to deal with on a daily basis.

As a counsellor, I understand the changes that an expatriate lifestyle brings - both to the employee and their family. Having gone through those transitions myself, I relate to it as a period in life where extensive changes are necessary for a whole family. Those changes may be welcome or unwelcome, however they will certainly be different and challenging.

I can help people adapt to the necessary changes when a person or a family return to live in UK after an extended period of overseas or travelling lifestyle.

I can also work, via Skype, with clients who would like to maintain an counselling process, whilst working and living overseas.

I offer a counselling-by-Skype service for those people who may find this convenient.

My training, work experience and any achievement

I have trained as a Counsellor in Exeter, gaining qualifications of the Advanced Diploma in Integrated Counselling, in accordance with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).
My qualifications incude TA101 in transactional analysis counselling.

Training and learning is a progressive and essential part of being a good counsellor. I attend workshops and continued professional development as part of my life as a counsellor and therapist.

My experience includes working as a counsellor in an occupational health situation and working with a variety of client issues as a private counsellor.

During a period of more than 20 years I was the Managing Director and General Manager of a small and developing company in Portugal. I am experienced in the trials and tribulations of business life, with its stresses and joys.

As a counsellor, I am especially interested and qualified in helping managers to enjoy their situations and positions; to enjoy intregrating your personal life with the benefits of the hard work and efforts which are part of business success.

Further Information

I also have therapy sessions available during early evenings and weekend mornings. My last evening session is at 7:00 pm.

I also offer Counselling-by-Skype for people who wish that service. I can combine that counselling manner with normal face-to-face sessions.

Other concerns & issues I deal with

Brian works with many issues which people find are having detrimental effects on their lives.

    STRESS:
I am interested in the subject of stress, how it affects people resulting from work or personal overexpectations.

    WORK-LIFE BALANCE:
People may often not understand or realise how their balance of life has grown into a one-sided situation.

    FRUSTRATION:
Clients may feel frustrated at not having their wishes met, often not really knowing what those wishes really are.

    RELATIONSHIP ISSUES:
Most people would like to improve their relationship, including the relationship that everybody has with themselves.

    ANGER ISSUES:
Anger is usually based on a fear, of something. Often that fear is not understood, counselling can enable a person to work towards resolving the fear which is behind the issue.

ADJUSTING TO UK LIFE, AFTER AN EXPAT WORLD:
Expatriate living is often very different to that of living in UK. Lifestyle, finances, climate, activities, travel, priviledges - they are all very different. This can be assisted by the possibility of counselling-by-skype which can be a beneficial counselling method - especially if combined with intermittant face-to-face counselling.
