About Sheila Lauchlan

TAKE THE FIRST STEPS TO CHANGE YOUR FUTURE......
I am a Relationship and Family Psychotherapist, and I work with individuals, couples and families. The focus of this therapy is on the communication patterns that occur between people, and how that affects relationships.

Often people find that they develop the same patterns in relationships, whether this is in their personal or working life. If these patterns are detrimental, this can lead to continuing problems throughout their lives. Once the patterns have been identified it is possible too create new patterns and new ways of relating.

With personal issues, individuals can be helped to see that they have a relationship to the problem, and this relationship can be changed. These difficulties can vary from major mental health concerns, to dilemmas that are difficult to resolve.

There are many solutions to life’s difficulties. I will work collaboratively with you, to explore these possibilities and together we can establish one that is right for you, your partner or family.

Often people come to therapy wanting to change others, but this is rarely possible. However by examining your reactions to situations, and by developing a different response, a new and richer relationship can evolve. Once a small adjustment is made, a ripple effect can stimulate other changes in your relationships.

WHAT ARE THE EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF CHILDREN’S DISTRESS?

Children do not always have the language to explain what is upsetting them. Often they will communicate their distress through their behaviour, usually by withdrawing into themselves or generating disruptive behaviour.

They just want to be understood, but instead their behaviour can quickly affect family relationships, and the situation can spiral out of control. So if you notice a change in your child’s behaviour, it is time to seek help, sooner rather than later.

My training, work experience and any achievement

I have an MSc in Systemic Psychotherapy and I am registered with the UKCP and The Association of Family Therapists

I originally trained as a mental health social worker and I have worked within the NHS for many years. I have worked both with adults as inpatients and in the community. My experience also includes working in a child and adolescent mental health team and as a student counsellor.

I have taken extra training in EMDR which processes unresolved trauma and I have found this to be very effective, especially with Birth Trauma.

I am a BUPA provider

My special interests are all areas of mental health, sexual abuse in childhood and eating disorders

Further Information

My training as a systemic therapist, incorporates narrative therapy and brief solution focused therapy and possibility therapy. I work both short and long term. I try to work as briefly as possible, but with more complex issues this can take longer. I work collaboratively as to the frequency of sessions. Often client like to be seen weekly in the initial stages, but then move to visiting fortnightly or monthly. Once I have done a face to face consultation I am happy to have SKYPE sessions if for example you are a frequent traveller.
