About Jill Wootten

You are an individual: You have your own unique responses and your own unique feelings. It is your experience that stays central in the counselling I offer. I focus on what’s important to you and the changes you want to achieve. I work to help you find ways to process, understand and overcome the individual difficulties you are faced with. Together we work to understand your experience and find new resources to help you move forward.

Problems like recurrent depression, anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty with grief or the breakdown of a relationship are often linked to experiences in your past. I help you to think about your current issue alongside your history. This enables you to develop an understanding of the root cause of your problem, which in turn helps you to achieve real change. This doesn’t mean that I only focus on your past, but that I take your whole life experience, not just the present day, into account when working with you. In this way you achieve change rooted in your own life experience, a change based on your understanding of yourself.

I offer a calm, confidential space, where you can find warmth, care and support in a well established private practice based in central Bath. I have over 19 years experience as a therapist and have worked in a general counselling agency for over 8 years and a family focused counselling service for 12 years. This has enabled me to develop an understanding of a wide range of therapeutic issues and to become aware of the need we all have to gain a personal understanding of our own life story.

Please feel free to contact me for an informal chat, ask questions or book an initial appointment. There is no obligation to continue and it might help you to decide if counselling could be helpful to you. I offer long term and short term counselling and have both day time and evening appointments. Some reduced fee places available; please feel free to discuss this with me. My consulting room is close to all major bus and train routes into Bath city centre, there are several car parks nearby.

Experienced Antenatal teacher:
As an antenatal teacher for The National Childbirth Trust, I taught couples for more than 10 years. This has made me very aware of the real mix of excitement, uncertainty, anxiety and worry that parents often feel during pregnancy, childbirth and throughout the parenting years. Combining this awareness with my role as a Psychotherapist gives me the ability to work effectively with a whole range of parenting issues including miscarriage, still birth, traumatic birth, relationship breakdown, fatherhood, infertility and parenting a disabled child. I have extensive experience working with postnatal depression and its impact on both partners. I have also been a birth partner on several occasions which has enabled me to gain an insight into this role.

Becoming a parent often stirs up your own experience of being a child. Some of these experiences are positive and some are not. For example, if you had a difficult relationship with your parents you may now be struggling to establish a relationship with your child. Past experiences can impact on your present day feelings and your expectations of yourself as a parent. The counselling I offer will help you to process your history alongside your current issues. I will help you understand how your parenting has been affected by your past as well as the present. This is not about blaming anyone for how you were brought up but about how you as an individual experience life. Working in this way allows you to grow into the parent you wish to be, making informed choices based on a better understanding of who you are both as an individual and as a parent.
