Hypnotherapy on Fear of Flying

July 15, 2011

Holiday season seems to be the most enjoying time of the year. It’s the time to relax, escape reality, and have some fun. However, while most people refuse to give up their holidays, 4 in 10 Brits who have flown find airports very stressful, CPP claimed. In addition, out of the 2,000 holidaymakers interviewed, almost 4 million are avoiding flying because of the stress they experience in most airports such as mislaid belongings, stress, delays on flight schedules, and the like.

Aviophobia: Why Many are so Afraid to Fly

There seems to be many reasons why a lot of people would rather spend their holidays at home than to fly to other places even though they have cash to spend. Millions of travellers find airports incredibly stressing that they have already given up flying. From the latest research conducted by CPP, an insurance company in the UK, 4 million travellers in the country have given up flying and one-third of Britons claimed that airport experiences are stressful.

Aviophobia or fear of flying is not a rare issue in the country; affecting 40% of people. Most of them believe that holiday doesn’t actually start until they head off the plane. Some even consider flying as more traumatic and nerve-racking than moving and going to work each day.

Fear of flying isn’t just prevalent in the UK. Actually, Aviophobia is one of the most common phobias. The sufferer is likely to experience worries and fear of the plane crashing, fear of nausea and feeling sickly, claustrophobia, fear of wetting and messing. Etc. In addition, sufferers tend to be troubled as well with the though of their houses and property at home plus the daunting procedures in airports. According to psychologists, these anxieties and fears have their root cause in the childhood experiences of the sufferer.

Understanding your Fear through Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is one of the most regarded methods of treating phobia. Generally, phobias have same effects- they make people feel extremely week and uneasy. Symptoms involve nausea and queasiness, excessive sweating and difficulty in breathing. Hypnotherapy deals with Aviophobia by treating the root cause of the phobia through the use of suggestions. A fear of flying can also be genetic or it can also be acquired or learned from parents or can be brought by sad and traumatic experiences.

Hypnosis trains the brain to adopt a particular state- an extremely relaxed state which is the feeling of having no fears at all. The hypnotist command the patient though positive suggestions while the latter is on a ‘sleep’ state. In this procedure, the subconscious is dominating the conscious mind. Once the subconscious took control of the mind, hypnosis can easily implant or suggest things to override the fear.

Regression therapy is the most commonly used procedure in hypnosis. The treatments focuses on eliminating the root cause of the fear by ‘revisiting’ traumatic experiences during childhood, changing the patient’s understanding of an event that has triggered the phobia. This time, the patient goes back to the past as an adult, brave enough to conquer his/her fears.
