Exercise Helps Lower Your Risk of More than 20 Chronic Diseases

Yes, exercise is good for your waistline. But it does way beyond that. In fact, whatever you are suffering from, exercise can help you. That’s the latest findings from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

For the study, researchers reviewed the effects of exercise therapy on 22 of the most common chronic diseases, including arthritis, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease and certain cancers. This was then compared with data of people doing no exercise or receiving standard care.

The findings revealed that exercise has a significantly positive effect on 86 per cent of physical performance and functional capacity indicators, including those that assess walking, lower body strength, balance and ability to complete everyday tasks. Around 20 per cent of the indicators had a large effect on the patient’s functional capacity while the remaining had a medium to small effect.

The researchers also found that exercise is safe for patients with chronic diseases.  For instance, aerobic exercise and resistance training were found to benefit people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Working out basically boosts patients’ strength, balance, and their ability to walk and complete everyday tasks.

’We hope that this article will remind health professionals to tailor appropriate exercise training even more actively for patients with chronic disease, also when exercise is not used to treat the disease but to prevent secondary disability caused by the disease.’ said Tero Pasanen, author of the study.

Researchers advise patients exercise to keep functioning and prevent disability. They hope the findings will help to control or prevent osteoarthritis before it takes hold. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of the disease and affects more than eight million people in the UK.
