WHAT HAPPENS IN COUNSELLING/ COACHING
Counselling/ coaching is a special relationship where the focus remains on you and what is happening in your life. Counselling/ coaching is different from other helping professions in that I do not, as a rule, give you advice or tell you what to do. This is because my aim is to help you think about your situation in such a way to help you develop greater awareness and understanding.
With this awareness and understanding you will then decide yourself whether you wish to make any changes.
My role is to help you to think more clearly, or look at things from a different perspective, to become more aware of your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. I will also help you to evaluate how accurate or helpful your current thinking patterns are and assist you to consider alternative ways of perceiving how things are in your life.
I do not judge or tell you what to do
DO I NEED COUNSELLING / COACHING
If you feel that these relate to you then the chances are that therapy will be helpful to you:-
You have problems harming the quality of your life and you dont know how to solve them
Your work , family and friendships are impaired by the problems you have
You are troubled by anxiety or depression
You find it difficult to talk to people you know, or you find it difficult to reach out to people, to develop meaningful relationships
You repeatedly behave in ways you regret
You are willing to talk over your troubles in private with a supportive and confidential counsellor, even though you may feel unsure or anxious about the thought of doing so
HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO COME FOR
This depends on what your needs are. Some people find that after only a very few sessions they have some clarity and focus and are ready to end the counselling.
Other people value the ongoing support and relationship with me and will continue to come for weeks, months or even years. There is no one size fits all when it comes to counselling.
The frequency and duration of your contact with me is something that we will keep under review as we work together. I will never tell you that you have to keep coming for sessions, you are always free to leave the sessions when you feel ready.
At the same time, it is helpful for us to agree mutually, in advance, when the counselling will end , so that we have time to bring things to a close.
HOW CONFIDENTIAL IS COUNSELLING/ COACHING
In order for counselling to be effective, it has to be confidential. This is something that I take very seriously. This level of confidentiality is one of the main ways in which counselling/coaching differs from other forms of helping, for example talking to friends or family can rarely offer the same degree of confidentiality as talking to a counselor.
Because of this confidentiality, you will find that, as you get used to coming for counselling, you are freer to talk about whatever you wish to. Many people find that this greater freedom helps them to explore areas of their lives that they may never have had a chance to talk about. In common with most other counsellors there are some situations where I may not be able to keep total confidentiality.
This will be in particular, if someone tells me that they are thinking of harming themselves in a way that I believe puts them at serious risk, or if someone tells me that they are doing something that puts others at risk, I may not be able to keep such information confidential.
However breaking confidentiality is rare, and only happens after talking this through first with to the person concerned. The information, to safeguard you/others which needs to be shared with a third party, will be kept to the basic minimum.
If you feel you need to talk, in a safe space which will allow you time to explore your options in a non judgemental, congruent, environment then give me a call.
