About Alison Carter

My name is Alison and I hope here, and in the following pages, I can explain a little bit about who I am, what counselling and psychotherapy are, how counselling may be able to help and what qualifies me to work with you.

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist and I am trained and experienced to work safely and effectively with the following kinds of issues:

Low self-esteem/confidence
Anxiety and fear
Bereavement and lossRelationships
Self harm
Eating disorders
AbuseTrauma and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

I have private counselling practices in Salisbury, Wiltshire and near Lymington, Hampshire, being within easy reach of Bournemouth, New Milton, the New Forest and surrounding areas.

My training, work experience and any achievement

BA (Hons) Counselling and Psychotherapy
Advanced Diploma in Counselling

I have also studied courses in:

Cognitive Behvaiour Therapy
Family and Couple Therapy
Group Therapy
Human Development/Sexuality
Traumatic Effects
Loss and Grief
Building Self Esteem
Working With Sexual Abuse
Suicide and Self Harm
Working with Young People and Substance Abuse
Assessing Clients for Short Term Counselling

I am an Integrative Therapist, which means I use a blend of the three main schools of counselling:

1. Psychodynamic Therapy

This is based on an individual’s unconscious and perceptions that they have developed throughout their childhood, and then looks at how these can affect their current behaviour and thoughts.

2. Humanistic Approach

Focuses on self-development, self-worth and values. How being valued as a person, without being judged, can help someone to accept who they are, and reconnect with themselves.
This approach aims to help people recognise their strengths, creativity and that they can have choices.

3. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Aims to help people overcome their emotional problems.

Cognitive means mental process, like thinking. The word ‘cognitive’ refers to everything that goes on in the mind including dreams, memories, images, thoughts and attention.

Behaviour refers to everything that you do. What you say, how you try to solve problems and how you act. It also refers to things that you don’t do, such as ‘biting your tongue’ instead of speaking your mind.

Therapy is the approach to combating a problem, illness or irregular condition.

Counselling Experience

I have worked in a variety of settings, both in the voluntary and private sectors, which includes working for an organisation for young people, delivering counselling in venues across the New Forest, and in hospitals, where I worked with patients and their families about issues relating to their illness and the impact this has on them.
Currently I have a private practice, where I also receive referrals for clients from G.P.’s,
EAP organisations and other professional bodies.
