About Corinne Dickson

Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor, EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner, Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy facilitator. Available week days, 9.00am - 6.30pm.

Welcome ….. thank you for visiting my profile.

Contacting me:

Choosing a therapist or counsellor can be a difficult and confusing process so, if you have any questions you can contact me confidentially either by email or by phone.

My phones are usually on silent so as not to interrupt a session with a client. However, they both have an answering service so if you leave a message, with your name, number and possible times for me to call back then I will return your call as soon as I can, or within one working day.

Why counselling?

As with many people these days, I reached a point in my life where the job I had was no longer challenging or fulfilling. So I set out on a journey of discovery, both academic and personal, which has been demanding and challenging at times, but which also has the great reward of being able to witness and be a part of the healing journey that others are making. Sometimes, although not always, the way is deeply troubling and emotionally painful for people, but there is also peace, comfort, joy and new beginnings to be experienced.

I am constantly reminded of our amazing ability to heal from the pain and distress that is so often part of life.

I work with individuals, couples, and occasionally small groups. The work is either short or long term depending on the client’s needs.

First session:

Once we’ve agreed a mutually convenient appointment, your first session is an opportunity to meet me, to ask any remaining questions you may have about counselling or psychotherapy and for you to begin speaking about what the difficulties you are facing. We may also discuss practical issues such as the frequency and number of sessions, and the method of payment.

My role throughout our time together is to listen and respond in ways that help move you towards resolution and healing. All sessions are confidential.

The following quote is included with the writer’s permission and their full name is not included so as to retain anonymity.

"After years of being a ’successful high achiever’ within a toxic work environment I eventually hit the proverbial wall when I was knocked for six by health issues followed by a family bereavement. Even then I soldiered on using rest and exercise and good friends as my aids to recovery. But when my family situation took another sudden blow I conceded I needed help. Life felt completely out of control. My fabric was unravelling like never before.

My sessions with Corinne provided me with a safe space to say things I couldn’t / daren’t say elsewhere. Corinne listened respectfully regardless of what I needed to say. She made expert interventions to remind me, even in my bleaker moments that there was no rush. That it was ok to take time to recover. She helped me recognise when I was getting stronger. She gave me hope when I was scared."

My training, work experience and any achievement

MSc Integrative Psychotherapy
Pg Dip Applied Psychology
BSc Hons Psychology
EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner
HEAL (Human Equine Alliance and Learning) Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Along the way I have gathered academic qualifications in counseling and psychotherapy, and additional training which includes EMDR, emotional freedom technique (EFT), equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP), Transactional Analysis (TA) and CBT. I also have experience of working in a variety of settings with many different people and issues.

I began with voluntary work for Cruse Bereavement Care where I saw many people who were facing the pain of bereavement, whether that was through natural causes or some kind of traumatic event. During my time with Cruse I worked as a bereavement support worker, a member of the Crisis team, bereavement support group facilitator and as a supervisor.

This was followed by several years working in NHS adult psychology departments where I met people who were facing difficulties such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), abuse, childhood trauma, relationship difficulties and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

When I started up in private practice I also worked part time in a therapeutic community that provides long-term residential support for adults with severe emotional disorders.

I have now been in private practice for more than 12 years. My office-based sessions are held in the attractive setting of Queen Square in Leeds city centre. My rooms are comfortable, confidential and quiet. Equine facilitated sessions are held at a riding school in Bramhope, whenever possible these are outside so that nature itself contributes to the therapeutic process.

Further Information

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a recognised therapy recommended on the NICE guidelines for treatment of trauma and there are a large number of research studies showing its effectiveness. Although originally developed to help resolution of major trauma it is now widely used for many different problems, including anxiety, depression and loss.

I have been an accredited EMDR practitioner since 2005 and have found it to be a very valuable approach with many clients.

You can also find more general information by visiting the EMDR UK & Ireland website.

"I had reached a cross roads in my life and truly believed that my life could not go on. I approached Corinne as a last resort. I considered that I was beyond help and that I was stuck in a desperate situation.

Luckily I was proved wrong. After meeting Corinne, there was an almost immediate change. I was able to acknowledge that the world was not black and white and that crucially I had options. The process took time; we spent months building a platform of stability in order for me to be in a position to deal with the trauma that had caused the almost irreparable damage.

Eventually I was stable enough to deal with the trauma via EMDR therapy; a therapy which has been widely acknowledged as an effective treatment for trauma. Just over a year on, my life has turned around. I didn’t believe that I would ever be in this position. I have landed my dream job and met my future husband. Working with Corinne enabled me to turn my life around. I don’t think I would be here now, if I had not met Corinne and I am very proud that I have become a success story."

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Essentially this is a therapy session outdoors, weather permitting, with a horse and a human therapist. Through spending time and developing a relationship with the horse you can learn about yourself, your relationships and experience deep emotional healing. You don’t need any horsemanship skills prior to starting the sessions and all the work is done with your feet firmly on the ground. I have been trained by Leigh Shambo of HEAL (Human Equine Alliance and Learning) in Washington, USA. Leigh has developed a way of working with the horses that is supported by research evidence.

If you would like to know more about this form of therapy then why not visit the HEAL website,

"Equine therapy has been an amazing experience for me. I was a completely blank canvas, I knew nothing about horses or equine therapy. To be working closely with a horse, and successfully communicate, has been such a privilege and revelation. There was a moment in the early sessions where my world just skewed slightly and lots of things fell into place.

Communicating with the horse has helped me re-evaluate how I communicate and react to people and situations. That wonderful moment when you recognise you are actually in tune with the horse is so satisfying. This has had an effect on all my relationships with family, friends and work situations. It is hard to describe how equine therapy has had such a positive effect on my life."
