What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a safe and natural approach to healthcare which focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework. It uses a variety of techniques which include massage and stretching techniques and manipulation, etc to ease the pain, correct the body's structure and strengthen the framework. Osteopathy aims to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. By doing so, the body will have the ability to heal itself and function efficiently.

How does it work?
Before your first treatment, your osteopath will make a full medical assessment by asking your medical history, diet, exercise and your day-to-day routine. They will examine your posture and  how you move your body. They will also check your pulse and your reflexes, and may also take your blood pressure and refer you for an x-ray if needed. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques such as massage and joint articulation to relieve pain, ease tension, stretch muscles, and mobilise your joints. You may hear a ‘click’when your osteopaths move joints but this shouldn't be painful. After your session, the osteopath may discuss exercises that you can do to improve your posture and movement.

Treatment cost
Treatment cost varies and depends on your condition, location etc. Generally, a first visit which lasts about an hour can cost from £25 - £60 and the following sessions which last up to 45 minutes will cost £20 - £50. The number of sessions you need depends on your condition and reaction to the treatment. Five sessions is the average, but please check with your practitioner before you start your treatment.

Tips for choosing your osteopath
It is important to check that your osteopath is fully trained and is registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) as this guarantees the qualifications and training.
