About Ruth Aylward-Davies

As a Relate Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Clinical Manager, I have twenty years experience of working with individuals, couples and families and as such I can understand and work with the challenges in life affecting us all. Whether it is affairs, life-stages, communication, depression, bereavement, work issues or a general feeling of low-self esteem that is impacting you personally or those around you, we can focus on these issues together in counselling. I also have a Masters in Eating Disorders and work with clients in this area, or where they want to look at their relationship with food and their body image.

I have a corporate background working in an investment bank that helps me to understand the particular pressures that can feel unique to city life. I also have a long-standing work relationship with Relate, who I continue to work with as they are the largest employer of counsellors in the UK and as such continue to be leaders in this field. At this organization we are aware of the impact of conflict within a couple relationship on teenagers and children and we seek to reduce the conflict especially when working with separation and divorce.

The counselling I offer covers newly formed relationships through to longer-term relationships and marriages, as well as separation and divorce. I also work with clients with are experiencing family issues arising from the impact of having young babies, children, teenagers, step parents, grandparents, in-laws, elderly dependants or illness. I also have experience of working within a cancer charity, which provides support to the individual who has a diagnosis as well as their families.

I have also been trained and work with 10-18 year-olds, which has enhanced my skills base as well as working in play therapy for children from 5 upwards.

It is important for clients to feel safe to talk about issues that are troubling them, so, after the initial assessment, the aim is to work at a client’s pace and in a style that suits them, be it supportive or more probing and challenging; this can either be short or longer-term. I hope to help and guide clients to find ways forward that they can use in their everyday lives. There is flexibility with appointments times, given that many clients have many commitments and stressors in their lives. I work using a number of theoretical approaches including psychodynamic; exploring the past to understand how it influences the present. I also use systemic theory; belief systems and patterns within current and past family interactions and attachment theory; patterns of relating to a significant other(s) in your life. In addition I also cognitive behavioural therapy which is important to focus on change.

In addition to this I am able to establish relationships with clients, which contain qualities of warmth and understanding in a process, which can feel overwhelming or demoralising.
