About Sandy Rowley CHARTERED COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST

Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out where to start in order to change elements of life and even yourself, however if you take the first steps by working with a professional psychologist, the difficulties become easier to overcome and eventually change.

Through Psychological Therapy and Life Coaching, I work with individuals, groups and various organisations including the NHS, Voluntary Organisations, Granada TV and other Private Companies. I also have a Private Practice in Eccleshall and in Stafford Town Centre.

I AM REGULATED BY THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS COUNCIL TO ENSURE CLIENT PROTECTION. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THIS LEVEL OF PROTECTION IS ACHIEVED FOR PUBLIC SAFETY.

Here are some of our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at Healthy Minds.

Q. What happens if I’m unsure which therapy I require?

A. Don’t worry, you will have an assessment with Sandy, she will help you to decide what will work for you during your assessment.

Q. Which is the quickest type of therapy?

A. That depends on the client and the problems that you are presenting with. For example if you want to deal with breaking a habit, it may be quicker for you to work with a hypnotherapist. If you are stuck in an unhealthy, long term, pattern of behaviour that is affecting your current life, it would be advisable to work a Chartered Psychologist. If you are stuck with career decisions then you would work well with the Executive Personal Coach. If you want to explore feelings that are bringing you down at the moment, then a counsellor may be a beneficial decision.

Q. What happens if the therapy doesn’t work?

A. Why wouldn’t it work? There are a number of possible reasons, if the work, including the homework is not understood, or completed, then like any new subject area that would have negative ramifications, careful attention to detail would be necessary. If the client does not feel understood by the therapist then that is of paramount importance to flag up. If clients’ repeatedly miss appointments this leads to a lack of continuity, this hinders progress.

Q. What if I cannot afford the fees?
A. There are other organisations that offer free therapy, an internet search may prove useful to ascertain what is available in your area. Alternatively, you could make a appointment with your GP they may be able to refer you onto a counsellor/psychologist within the National Health Service.

Q. Can a psychologist be deceived?

A. I would love to say no, however I can’t, the answer is yes they can. At Healthy Minds therapeutic work is based on a contract of honesty on all people present. When a person means to deceive the psychologist, it is possible to pick up on it right away although more accurately confirmed with certain observations over time.

Q. Do the psychologists/therapists also have problems?

A. Of course, they too are human and not aliens from mars, even your Doctor can become ill with flu or a sore throat! Psychologists are not rare creatures that are immune from suffering. It is fair to say though, that psychologists can learn to apply their knowledge and interventions to their own life if in trouble, or struggling with life’s traumas.

Q. Do people feel ashamed to talk with someone else, even if it’s a psychologist/therapist?

A. Often, it’s a natural feeling but rest assured that type of feeling soon disappears when you are working within Healthy Minds, remember that therapists are required to uphold the professional secret.

Q. My relationship with my partner isn’t working as it was, does couple therapy work?

A. It is usual for couples to come to therapy when the relationship is severely broken/fractured, hence making recovery complex. The best time to attend is when you know it’s getting to a difficult point, don’t ignore it and bury your heads. If you come to Healthy Minds soon enough you may find that 2 or 3 sessions does the trick but always remember that;

a) There are no magic wands at Healthy Minds, therapy is demanding and requires both partners to be honest within the work.
b) A couple indicates two people working towards the end goal, this needs to be upheld by all parties.

c) Couples often work with specific aspects that depend on if the relationship is actually broken or does it just require improving? Are emotions being managed accurately? Communication issues are often a huge problem, others may be sexual relations, housework duties, power and influence, attitudes toward children, infidelities, routines.

d) Therapy aims to search/explore and find the best for both individuals so that they either remain as a couple or dissolve it.

Q. I don’t have a problem, as such, but I would really like to understand myself more.
All of the professionals at Healthy Minds can assist with this type of personal development. It is a service that has been used in many different ways;

A. Coaching for interviews

B. Understanding your relationship choices

C. Learning why you don’t feel happy

D. Understanding your behaviours at different locations

E. Discovering why things are as they are in your life

My training, work experience and any achievement

I am a CHARTERED PSYCHOLOGIST with under-graduate and a post-graduate degrees in Psychology; I have completed the Doctoral training route in Counselling Psychology.
MSc. Counselling Psychology
PG Diplomas (part 1 & 2) Counselling Psychology
BSc (Hons) Psychology

I have clinical experience working with adults and young people, work can either be with individuals on a one to one basis or alternatively within couples counselling.

Many individuals suffer from more than one problem such as general confusion with them self and/or external life issues, these events can then compound and create relationship issues. Often this cycle of helplessness/hopelessness may lead onto addiction(s), eating disorders, abuse and other sexual issues.

It is not unusual for individuals that are going through some of these difficulties to also be struggling with low self-esteem and low self-confidence, this can create feelings of profound anxiety and depression.

There are times when some of the problems being experienced by individuals are occurring through unresolved anger that may be child related or indeed adult related.

Other situations that frequently arise may have been completely out of an individuals control, resulting in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or sometimes stress at work or at home, bereavement, termination, abortion or miscarriage. This is when some other symptoms develop, these need to be worked through to alleviate the individuals suffering. Some of the symptoms include; phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and social anxiety.

Individuals suffering from Domestic Abuse is an area that I am passionate about and bringing about change is my priority. Domestic abuse has many different forms and affects all classes of people, all abuse is wrong including emotional abuse, whereby an abusive person may control finances and belittle you in many other ways, behind closed doors and in public, the abuser doesn’t care about your hurt in fact they feed off you, metaphorically speaking. It’s often hard to face up to the abuse and to admit that it’s happening to you, you begin to live a life of pretence, perhaps looking fine to the outside world but actually crumbling inside. The important thing is that you don’t have to suffer in silence, because with careful planning and accurate therapy, individuals can break free and put an end to the monsters that try to destroy them. Remember, abusers are often very charming and in many cases are suffering from serious mental health problems, their blackness is transferred onto you, learn to fight back.

Another fundamental part of my work is within the area of anger management, and rehabilitation work with individuals suffering from acquired brain injury.

I train and supervise students and other professionals in mental health issues and in attaining qualifications in counselling.

I use an integrative approach, this includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Gestalt Therapy, Experiential Therapy, Psychodynamic and Person Centred Therapy.

Many individuals need help but don’t know where to turn, never be afraid to ask for help as it could change your life!
