About Jackie Graham Acupuncture

The thing that I love most about my job is seeing people getting better.
- I deal with people on a one to one basis and each treatment is tailored specifically to the individual using questioning, palpation (touch), Chinese pulse and tongue diagnosis to inform treatment.
- I combine the ancient art of Five Element Acupuncture with Traditional Chinese Medicine, the style of acupuncture used in China today, to achieve the most effective and lasting results for each patient.
- Emphasis is always on helping the body to heal itself by identifying and treating the root cause of illness.
- I have a particular interest in women’s health ranging from menstrual problems, through to pregnancy and post pregnancy support and at the other end of the spectrum helping women cope with the menopause, in particular dealing with hot flushes.
- However, I also have experience in dealing with a wide range of issues including musculo-skeletal problems, headaches, digestion, stress and anxiety, chronic fatigue and asthma amongst others.

Acupuncture Information
What Can I Expect at an Acupuncture Treatment?
- The following is some acupuncture information on what to expect when you first come for a session. When you first come for treatment Jackie will carry out an in-depth interview with you. This will cover your medical history, lifestyle, personal and family history. Jackie will also take your pulse and look at your tongue. This enables Jackie to build up a clear picture in order to tailor treatment accordingly. Jackie will then treat you at this first session.
How many Acupuncture Sessions will I need?
- The number of treatments required and frequency will vary from person to person. Some people will feel considerably better after 3 to 4 treatments, for others it will take longer. Usually treatments are likely to be on a weekly basis depending upon your condition. As this improves treatments may become less frequent. So you may reach the stage where you come less regularly but use acupuncture as a preventative treatment. This will help to maintain your body’s natural balance.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine. They are nothing like dressmaking needles or those used in syringes. Many people barely notice the needles whilst others are more sensitive. Also people may find different points are more sensitive than others. However the majority of people who try acupuncture find it a relaxing experience.

Treatments
Acupuncture Treatments
- Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing whereby very fine needles are inserted into points along “channels” or “meridians” of the body. “Qi” or energy flow along these channels and after questioning you, checking your pulses and looking at your tongue Jackie will select the most appropriate points for you to enable the Qi to flow smoothly, thereby encouraging your body to return to health. The needles are sterile and are only used once. Most people find acupuncture is painless but some patients are more sensitive than others and some points are more tender than others. Acupuncture points are found all over the body and it is advisable to wear loose clothing when coming for treatments. To find out more about how acupuncture works please watch this short video.

Tui Na
- Tui Na is an ancient form of massage which uses key points on the surface of the body to stimulate the body’s own natural healing process. The aim is to release tension and increase the circulation of Qi and blood. Jackie will often use this technique combined with acupuncture to treat muscle and joint pain. Both Tui Na and acupuncture treatments come under the umbrella of Chinese Medicine, using the same meridians and points.

Gua Sha
- Gua Sha is a very simple and effective traditional healing technique practised widely in parts of East Asia. During a gua sha treatment, a round-edged instrument is used to stroke the skin in a certain area of the body. Massage oil is applied to the surface of the skin to stop any discomfort from friction. The effect of gua sha treatments is to reduce blockages and to facilitate improved circulation.

Moxibustion (Moxa)
- Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of a herb called mugwort to facilitate healing. The purpose of moxibustion is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health. In Western medicine, moxibustion has successfully been used to turn breech babies into a normal head-down position prior to childbirth. It can also be used successfully in the treatment of musculo-skeletal problems and period pains. Moxa can be applied directly to the skin, placed on the end of a needle or used indirectly by waving a moxa stick over the skin. Patients find moxa a pleasant warming experience.

Cupping
- Cups are used to create suction on the skin and the muscles thereby increasing blood flow to the area. The points focused on during cupping are based on the points and patterns of energy which flow through the body. It can be particularly effective in treating old injuries which haven’t fully healed and in helping to clear toxins.

Electro Acupuncture
- An electric current is passed through acupuncture needles promoting the flow of Qi and blood which helps relieve pain, warms the muscles and removes blood stasis. It is often used for muscle and joint pain.

After suffering several months with shoulder and back pain I decided to try acupuncture. After a few sessions with Jackie I found a significant improvement. I would highly recommend Jackie.

Jackie is an excellent acupuncturist! I was recommended to try out acupuncture from a friend after I was diagnosed by nhs that i have ‘unexplained’ infertility. It was most likely linked to stress. So, it was not more than 2.5 months I was under Jackie’s treatment when i got pregnant. I am so grateful to her.
